Himself a survivor of trauma during the First World War, Kokoschka's technique lent itself to psychologically probing portraits of his contemporaries in the avant garde art world. Von Lücken was a poet whose own work is largely forgotten, but whose appearance survives him in portraits by both Kokoschka and Otto Dix.
