Nattier was a highly successful artist in the court of French King Louis XV, known for producing the type of portrait you see here: elegant and sumptuous, flattering to his subject while maintaining a faithful (at least recognizable) likeness. The title of Duc d’Estissac, still extant to this day in France, is associated with the La Rochefoucauld family, one of France’s most noble.
